County Jail
The Knox County Jail, built in 1934, is under the Sheriff’s supervision and houses:
- State prisoners
- Santee Sioux Nation prisoners (via BIA)
- U.S. Marshal prisoners
Staff includes:
- 8 full-time Jailors/Dispatchers
- Chief Jailor (also Head Jailer)
Responsibilities:
- Inmate Care: Maintaining custody and care of inmates, including dietary needs and physician-prescribed diets.
- Shift Coverage: Jailors work overlapping shifts to ensure 24/7 coverage, with at least one on duty at all times.
- Emergency Communications: Jailors also serve as dispatchers for fire/rescue and weather alerts.
- Clerical Duties: Chief Jailor manages scheduling and assigns clerical tasks during busy office hours.
The jail passes annual inspections by Nebraska Jail Standards and the BIA.
