County Jail

The Knox County Jail, built in 1934, is under the Sheriff’s supervision and houses:

  • State prisoners
  • Santee Sioux Nation prisoners (via BIA)
  • U.S. Marshal prisoners

Staff includes:

  • 8 full-time Jailors/Dispatchers
  • Chief Jailor (also Head Jailer)

Responsibilities:

  • Inmate Care: Maintaining custody and care of inmates, including dietary needs and physician-prescribed diets.
  • Shift Coverage: Jailors work overlapping shifts to ensure 24/7 coverage, with at least one on duty at all times.
  • Emergency Communications: Jailors also serve as dispatchers for fire/rescue and weather alerts.
  • Clerical Duties: Chief Jailor manages scheduling and assigns clerical tasks during busy office hours.

The jail passes annual inspections by Nebraska Jail Standards and the BIA.
